Layers, Not Either/Or

When Washington Code Requires One
Washington adopts the National Electrical Code statewide through L&I, currently the 2023 edition, with the 2026 NEC scheduled to take effect December 31, 2026. Surge protection entered the code in the 2020 cycle and carries through the 2023 edition as Section 230.67, which requires every dwelling unit service to have a Type 1 or Type 2 surge protective device installed in or adjacent to the service equipment.
The part homeowners miss is that the same section applies whenever service equipment is replaced. In practice, that means three situations trigger the requirement:
- New construction — every new home gets one
