Overview

Whole House Generator Installation

Never lose power again.

Whole house generator installation in Seattle and across the Eastside. Generac, Kohler, and Briggs & Stratton standby systems with automatic transfer switch — permitted, inspected, and warrantied.

When the power goes out in Seattle, you usually find out the hard way how many things in your house actually depend on electricity. The fridge stops, the heat pump stops, the sump pump stops, the home office stops, and the kid's CPAP stops. A standby generator is the difference between "we lost power for two days" and "we didn't notice until our neighbor texted."

Mad Dog Electric handles whole house generator installation in Seattle and across the Eastside — Generac, Kohler, and Briggs & Stratton — from the first site visit through the L&I inspection and the first month of monitoring after startup. We're a licensed Washington electrical contractor and we've done generator installs in everything from a 1920s Capitol Hill craftsman to brand-new builds in Sammamish.

The work that goes into a clean install is what separates a system that runs for 20 years from one that's giving you problems by year three.

  • Automatic standby generators (Generac, Kohler, Briggs)
  • Service-rated automatic transfer switch (ATS)
  • Natural gas & propane fuel options
  • Real load calculation & generator sizing
  • Annual maintenance plans available

Why Mad Dog

Why Choose Us for Generators

Automatic Backup

Senses the outage, starts itself in 10–30 seconds, transfers your panel via the ATS, and shuts off when utility is back. You don't lift a finger.

Generac, Kohler, or Briggs

We install all three. Honest comparison during the site visit so you pick what actually fits your home and budget.

Right-Sized to Your House

Real load calc — no "8 kW is fine for everyone" hand-waving. Sized to your actual loads with headroom for a heat pump or EV charger.

Cold-Weather Ready

Cold-weather kit included on every install. Battery warmer, oil heater, crankcase heater — prevents no-start issues at 25°F.

Do You Need This?

Signs You Need Generators

A standby generator isn't right for everyone. If one or more of these is true, it's worth getting a quote:

  • You work from home and a multi-hour outage costs real money
  • Someone in the house relies on medical equipment (CPAP, oxygen, dialysis)
  • You have a well pump — when power goes, water goes
  • Your sump pump has saved your basement before
  • You've got a freezer full of food, or run a home business
  • You live somewhere outage-prone (foothills, big trees, end of a long line)

The Mad Dog Guarantee

Six Guarantees, Zero Fine Print

  • Licensed, Bonded & Insured
  • 3-Year Workmanship Warranty
  • No Price Change Guarantee
  • Free, Upfront Estimates
  • Owner-Led Team of 7
  • Family-Owned & Operated

How It Works

Our Simple Process

1

Site Visit & Load Calc

We look at the panel, your major loads, where the unit can sit per code, and where the gas line runs. Fixed-price quote with everything broken out.

2

Pad & Gas

Small concrete or composite pad poured. Gas line run from meter (or propane tank) to the unit, sized for the BTU load.

3

Electrical & ATS

Service-rated automatic transfer switch installed next to your main panel. Wired to take over the whole panel during an outage.

4

Startup & Inspection

We run the unit, verify automatic transfer, set the weekly self-test, and walk you through the controls. Then meet the L&I inspector.

Real Pricing

What Generators Cost in Seattle

All-in pricing for a fully installed Generac or Kohler standby system in the Seattle area, 2026:

10–14 kW (essentials)

$8,500 – $13,000

Small home, key circuits only

18–22 kW (whole house)

$13,000 – $18,500

Most single-family homes

24–26 kW (large home)

$17,000 – $24,000

Big home, EV charging, heat pump

Includes unit, ATS, pad, gas line work, electrical, permits, and startup. Biggest variables are gas line distance from your meter and whether your panel needs an upgrade.

Permits & Code

Permitted, Inspected, Done Right

Standby generator installs in Washington require both an electrical permit (us) and a gas piping permit (the gas fitter). Both get inspected. We handle our side; if you don't have a preferred plumber, we have one we work with regularly. The ATS, generator placement (minimum 18" from house, 5 ft from doors/windows), and gas sizing all need to meet code — we handle every piece.

Google Review
I had a wonderful experience with Mad Dog Electric. They were recommended to me by friends who were very happy with their service, so I decided to call. David answered right away and was very friendly, professional, and easy to talk to. He took the time to understand what I needed and explained everything in a clear, simple way. We scheduled a consultation, and he arrived on time, inspected everything efficiently, and gave me very helpful advice. He explained the best options for my situation, the possible price range, the steps of the work, and what would be involved both on his side and with the city. I really appreciated how patient, honest, and knowledgeable he was. David was a pleasure to work with, and I would gladly recommend him to anyone looking for a reliable electrician. Thank you very much, David!
