Most full-size hot tubs need a dedicated 240-volt, 50-amp GFCI-protected circuit — not an extension cord and not a shared outlet. Here's what the code actually requires in Washington, and what a safe hookup involves.

Here's what hot tub wiring actually requires: most full-size spas need a dedicated 240-volt circuit — usually 50 amps — run from your panel through a GFCI disconnect mounted at least 5 feet from the water, with the buried portion in conduit at code depth. All of it takes an electrical permit and an inspection in Washington. Smaller "plug-and-play" tubs run on an ordinary 120-volt circuit instead, and that difference shapes everything: cost, heat-up speed, and how much electrical work the install involves.

A hot tub is one of the most demanding things you can add to a home's electrical system — a heater, one or more pump motors, and controls, all running outdoors, inches from water your family sits in. The National Electrical Code dedicates a chunk of Article 680 to exactly this situation, and Washington enforces the 2023 edition today (the 2026 NEC takes effect December 31, 2026). Below is the whole picture in plain terms — circuit sizes, the GFCI and disconnect rules, trenching, bonding, permits, and honest Seattle-area cost drivers — the same checklist we work through on every spa hookup and panel job across the greater Seattle area.

120-Volt Plug-and-Play vs 240-Volt Hardwired

Every hot tub on the market is one of two electrical animals. A plug-and-play spa runs on standard 120-volt household power through a factory cord with a built-in GFCI plug — no new circuit, no hardwiring, minimal electrical work. The tradeoff is a small heater that can't keep up: heat-up takes many hours, and in a Puget Sound winter the heater may lose ground while the jets run, because heater and jets can't always draw full power at the same time on a 15- or 20-amp circuit.

A 240-volt hot tub — which is most of them — has a heater roughly four times as powerful, runs heat and jets together, and holds temperature year-round. In exchange, it needs real infrastructure: a dedicated circuit from the panel, an outdoor GFCI disconnect, buried conduit, and hardwired connections made under permit. The Circuit: 50 Amps, 4 Wires, Copper

Your spa's spec sheet states the required circuit size — usually 50 amps, sometimes 60 for big multi-pump models, 40 for a few compact ones — and the installation has to match it. A typical 50-amp run uses #6 AWG copper THWN-2 conductors in conduit: two hots, a neutral, and a ground. Modern spa control packs need that neutral because their electronics and lights run on 120 volts internally, so this is a four-wire feed. Older three-wire hookups you may find on a used tub don't meet current code for a new installation.

Two details matter more than people expect. First, Article 680 requires an insulated copper equipment grounding conductor — not bare wire — sized per the circuit, and never smaller than #12. Second, ordinary indoor NM cable (romex) can't be used for the wet, outdoor, or underground portions of the run. The last few feet into the spa's control pack are usually liquid-tight flexible conduit, which the code caps at 6 feet for exactly this use.

Check Panel Capacity First

A 50-amp, 240-volt circuit is a serious bite out of a 100-amp service — and many Seattle-area homes built before the 1980s are still on one, often already feeding an electric range or dryer. Before the tub is ordered is the right moment for a load calculation. If the panel can't carry it, the spa circuit waits on a panel upgrade — better to learn that in week one than on delivery day.

GFCI Protection & the Spa Disconnect

Every hot tub circuit needs ground-fault protection — the NEC is absolute about it, and for good reason: a GFCI trips on a few milliamps of leaking current, fast enough to stop a shock in water before it turns lethal. In practice both requirements — GFCI and a shutoff — are usually satisfied by one piece of equipment: an outdoor-rated "spa panel," a small weatherproof box holding a 50- or 60-amp GFCI breaker. The code also dictates where that disconnect lives. It must be readily accessible and within sight of the spa equipment, and at least 5 feet horizontally from the inside walls of the tub — far enough that nobody can touch the water and the disconnect at the same time. Most installs land it on the house wall or a post between 5 and 15 feet away. That placement isn't bureaucracy: if a pump seizes or someone's in trouble, anyone standing dry can kill power without reaching over the water.

Placement Rules Around the Water

  • Ordinary receptacles stay at least 6 feet from the water's edge, and anything within 20 feet must be GFCI-protected
  • No overhead service conductors above the tub — Article 680 demands large clearances, so a spa never goes under the power lines feeding the house
  • Light fixtures near or above the water face height and GFCI restrictions — worth checking before mounting anything over a deck-set tub
  • Metal within 5 feet of the water — rails, ladders, large fittings — generally gets bonded with #8 solid copper so everything a wet hand can touch sits at the same electrical potential

That last item is equipotential bonding, and it's the part of Article 680 homeowners have usually never heard of. Bonding doesn't clear a fault the way a breaker does — it eliminates voltage differences between touchable surfaces, so stray current has no reason to cross a human body. Many listed self-contained spas installed above grade qualify for a code exception that simplifies perimeter bonding, which is one more reason the equipment listing and the install instructions matter as much as the code book.

The Trench: Getting Power Across the Yard

Unless the tub sits against the house, the circuit crosses the yard underground. Buried PVC conduit needs at least 18 inches of cover under the NEC's burial table; rigid metal conduit can go as shallow as 6 inches, which sometimes saves a fight with roots or rockery in older Seattle yards. The trench is honest manual work and often a meaningful slice of the labor bill — routing around mature landscaping, a concrete patio, or a retaining wall is frequently the difference between an easy hookup and an expensive one.

One planning note that pays for itself: call 811 for utility locates before anyone digs, and think about where the spa might sit in ten years, not just this summer. Moving a tub 8 feet later means moving conduit, wire, and the disconnect with it.

Permits & Inspections in Washington

A new 240-volt circuit with an outdoor disconnect and buried conduit is permitted electrical work everywhere in Washington. In most of the state — Bellevue, Everett, Renton, and the rest of the Puget Sound suburbs — the electrical permit and inspection go through the Department of Labor & Industries. Inside Seattle city limits, electrical permits are handled by the Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections instead — Seattle runs its own electrical program. Either way, expect the inspector to look at the trench before it's backfilled and the finished work at final.

Skipping the permit isn't a shortcut worth taking. An unpermitted spa circuit is a classic home-inspection flag at resale, a potential problem for an insurance claim involving the tub, and — since this is a circuit people sit in water next to — the one place third-party inspection genuinely earns its fee.

What Hot Tub Wiring Costs in the Seattle Area

Every yard is different, so honest numbers come as drivers, not a single figure. A straightforward hookup — panel with spare capacity, a short run, an easy trench — typically lands in the low-to-mid four figures all-in: GFCI spa panel, copper wire, conduit, trenching, permit, and labor. From there, four things move the number most:

  • Distance from the panel — #6 copper is expensive per foot, and a run across the house plus across the yard adds up fast
  • The trench — soft lawn is quick; roots, rockery, or cutting through a patio is not
  • Panel capacity — if a load calculation says the service can't carry 50 more amps, a panel or service upgrade becomes its own project first
  • Circuit size — a 60-amp spa means heavier wire and a bigger disconnect than a 40-amp one

The good news: none of this is guesswork after a site visit. The panel, the route, and the spa's spec sheet determine the price almost completely, which is why a fixed quote before work starts is a reasonable thing to insist on.

Why This Isn't a DIY Project

Plenty of electrical jobs around a house are honest DIY territory. This one isn't, and not just because Washington requires permitted work: it's 240 volts at 50 amps terminating inches from water, with GFCI function, bonding, and disconnect placement all doing real life-safety work.
