Instead of a single cable bundling the conductors together the way modern NM (“Romex”) cable does, knob-and-tube runs individual hot and neutral wires separately through open air. Ceramic knobs, nailed to the framing, hold each wire a short distance off the wood; ceramic tubes are set into holes drilled through joists and studs so the wire can pass through framing without touching it directly. The conductors themselves are solid copper, wrapped in rubber or cloth insulation rather than plastic.
There are two design features that made sense in 1910 and cause most of today's problems. First, the open-air spacing was intentional — it let the wires shed heat into the surrounding air, since the insulation of the day wasn't rated to handle heat buildup the way modern thermoplastic insulation is. Second, there's no ground conductor anywhere in the system, because grounding simply wasn't part of residential electrical practice yet. In practice, that means any home built before about 1950 is worth checking, and it's common to still find sections of original knob-and-tube in homes built into the early 1960s — particularly in attics, additions, or rooms that a later remodel skipped over. Is Knob-and-Tube Wiring Safe?
Original, undisturbed knob-and-tube wiring in open air, carrying modest loads, can keep functioning without a dramatic failure — which is exactly why so much of it is still quietly in service in older homes. But “still working” isn't the same question as “safe by today's standard,” and the honest answer is that it fails that second test. Can You Get Homeowners Insurance With Knob-and-Tube Wiring?
This is where knob-and-tube stops being just a maintenance question and starts affecting your ability to buy, sell, or renew coverage on a house. Many insurers won't write a new policy, or won't renew an existing one, on a home with active knob-and-tube wiring — the same scrutiny they apply to recalled Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels. If an electrician finds one section of brittle insulation or a bad splice, it's a fair bet the rest of the circuit — installed the same year, by the same crew, to the same standard — is aging out right along with it. A spot repair can buy time on a single problem area, but it doesn't solve the underlying issues of no ground and aging insulation across the rest of the house, and it won't satisfy an insurer asking about knob-and-tube in general.
